There are new lifestyles that have changed our already-settled expectations. Solo female travel is one of them that is worth addressing the causes and evaluating tips for its safety. Although there are some general rules, which must be considered and the present blog focuses on Solo female travel tips to Iran. Before looking at such precautions, it seems to be of particular interest to briefly review the motivations leading to such a phenomenon. The modern world generally has brought about a feeling of boredom and monotonous life that creates a strong desire for a kind of alteration that restores meaning to the barren modern life. The hassles of today’s world also press people to seek a lonely corner to take refuge in and feel better. Solo traveling would open a window to a peaceful experience.

In other words, solo traveling would give travelers a sort of self-protection against intruding factors from work, coping with life, or even different tastes of co-workers or friends. This way, one can focus on her interests and favorite lists. This is rather a relief than pride or self-centeredness. In one word, this is a kind of therapy for a busy, exhausted mind, this is indeed a kind of medication. Now that the motivations are clear and considered to be like medicine, it is vital to approach this fact from a safe viewpoint so that the sugar-coated pill of solo travel turns out to be all sweetness and happiness. Within this context, those females who want to step in and enter the adventurous world of solo travel need to seriously follow up on some tips especially while traveling to a country that has its specific rules and traditions like Iran to enjoy their enterprising experience.

Search completely and fully about your destination. Iran is a historical country with a rich cultural and traditional background. Knowing these customs is necessary for a solo woman who wants to travel to Iran. Search to find enough crucial information about public transportation, the right places to eat, the dominant beliefs and social viewpoints of the society like if the society is patriarchal or not, or the general perspective of the society about women or specifically about solo traveling of women. To search about it, it is far better to ask about travelers who have traveled to Iran before or search online travel agencies and read related blogs or reviews. Within this context, try to predict every possible danger or scenario and try to find solutions for them in advance.

It is better to inform one or some of your relatives about your travel plan since in solo travels it is reasonable to let another person know about the places you would like to visit or the hotels you would like to stay. Regarding the places you would like to visit in Iran, you need to see if that historical place is free to visit by a woman or not. More importantly, what would be the conditions you need to follow like having an appropriate dress based on the regulations of the country? Moreover, you need to know enough information about the hotels and see which places are socially safe and appropriate for single women travelers. Also better to double-check in advance to see if your target hotel accepts single women travelers. Fortunately, most of the hotels in Iran welcome women solo travelers.

Try to be in touch and communicate with the local people and other single women travelers who are staying in your hotel or you may even find them online. Iranian people are naturally very sociable, and amiable and mingle with tourists. So, it is a very good idea to ask local people like the shopkeepers, or those working in your hotels about the safe areas or the visiting spots and the specific features together with the possible limitations. This way, you would receive the information you want exactly from those who are in your target society and already know the culture, customs, and norms. By doing this, you can easily prevent probable dangers that can await every unfamiliar tourist, especially a single woman traveler whose gender might cause extra issues in some societies.

Make enough effort to remain invisible as much as possible. By using the term “ invisible” we mean not doing things or behaving in ways that easily attract the attention of the people ( passers-by stare). This is a very safe social behavior, especially for single women traveling to Iran where some cultural and ideological issues are considered to matter still, especially for some male figures. For example, wearing sharp flashy colors laughing loudly, or mingling too much with male figures might be misunderstood specifically when you are traveling by yourself without any companion. This is in a way respecting the culture of the society you are traveling to as well.

Be watchful and try to look simple without wearing jewelry as every kind of decoration makes you the target of thieves. Also, watch your wallet and don’t carry big money. Better to keep your precious things hidden. Do not trust strangers. Please also bear in mind that some actions of lifestyle might put you in trouble. For instance, riding a bike by women is not that popular in Iran but not forbidden. Yet, when you are traveling to Iran alone it is better to avoid it. Also better to choose the time for walking or other activities as night times might not be one hundred percent safe.

Traveling by yourself does not mean that you always need to stay alone. You can join other women, especially those you might meet in your hotels or even in public. You can also ask to join daily tours by referring to the famous travel agencies of the city you are in or even the one in your hotel. This is very safe and at the same time interesting to get familiar with other women while you are also enjoying your solo travel.

Most importantly, in case of trouble, do not try to solve the problem by yourself. Immediately refer to the nearest police station or the reception desk of your hotel and ask for help. This way, you won’t get hurt. If you try to adventurously get involved yourself, this means putting yourself at risk. Within this context, try to request travel insurance before your trip. To be more cautious, try to refer to mobile connection services at the airport or in the city you stay to introduce you to the best sim card choice so that you can stay in touch with your family and friends to keep them always updated about the places you visit or where you stay. It is of crucial importance to inform them via text messages or calls about the place you’re about to visit/stay or have recently stayed.

Enjoy your solo travel and stay safe by following the points this article tried to point out.

Tehran Grand Bazaar is situated in the south corner of Tehran’s Centre and can be listed as one of the largest bazaars in the world in its type. This multifunctional bazaar includes guest houses, mausoleums, mosques, and banks for business, shopping, tourism, and many other purposes. There are several passageways in this grand bazaar specific for various goods. It is easily accessible through different entrance doors. Although some of them are closed during the night times for the sake of security, most of them are open and the visitors can reach their desired corridors easily from early in the morning till early in the evening. The central Metro of Tehran is a great spot to help visitors get there.

This grand bazaar has a long story behind its construction. It dates back to thousands of years ago. The surrounding alleys reflect the old, antique history of Iran’s culture, civilization, and art. One can look at its architecture and face the abundant Persian talents applied in its construction including domes, courtyards, and the beautiful arches together with the alluring designs of the ceilings. The classic forms used in the architecture of Tehran Grand Bazaar like the circles, and squares are reminiscent of the Persian themes of perfection and balance. The corridors are ten kilometers in length and the visitors can reach the bazaar from every corner of them.

Tehran Grand Bazaar

The 4th century BC is the approximate time in history when the Tehran Grand Bazaar was constructed. When Iran was under the influence of Islamic culture during the 7th century, it became the hub of business that helped the bazaar flourish in economy and marketing aspects specifically during the Safavid era. The importance of the Tehran Grand Bazaar was so that because of its extension, variety of functions, and economic value it became well-known as a city itself. Later on, as Tehran city got developed both from the point of view of population and vastness, the Grand Bazaar was not referred to as a city anymore. Within this context, although modern business centers have emerged in the capital city of Tehran. Tehran Grand Bazaar is still considered to host valuable, key transactions that not only belong to Tehran but also target other cities in Iran. In a sense, one can claim that it is the heart of finance and business in Iran, highly important for the Iranian people and tourists.

The stores of Tehran Grand Bazaar host a variety of products such as Persian spices, copper stuffs, precious metals, gold, papers, Persian rugs, and fabrics of all types. Surprisingly, in addition to traditional goods, the visitors also find modern products far cheaper than elsewhere. The different sections of its building date back to 400 years ago when the main halls and passageways were built. However, instead of its antique heritage, the majority of its stores belong to the early modern period. Those that belong to traditional Iran and represent old age are mostly unified in form and style. From another side of the spectrum, the modern side of the bazaar is creatively different in style and shape, really reflecting the modern spirit and taste.

Fortunately, to maintain the grandeur of its classic origin, there have been several renovations and improvements. During the constitutional revolution, the Tehran Grand Bazaar gained significant importance, with many elite, rich individuals invested to build additional little bazaars and rows to it. However, during the famous Qajar king, Naser-Al-Din Shah, in the 19th century, gorgeous decorations were added to its traditional architecture. It was exactly the time when the Grand Bazaar of Tehran also became the center for activities concerning socio-political issues. The challenging parties considered the bazaar as a suitable place for their gatherings and meetings. The neighboring alleys have turned the district of the Grand Bazaar into a traditional tourist spot highly attractive for the twists and turns of the lanes that are traditionally roofed.

The ambiance of the area reminds the visitors of different periods that the Grand Bazaar has experienced so far from the Safavid up to the Pahlavi and to the present time. Even now, it is a real gallery of fragrances, colors, herbs, home furniture, nuts, and fresh fruits that take every visitor to the depth of the Iranian lifestyle and civilization. The labyrinthine structure of this surreal exhibition is enticing and makes every tourist impatiently head for shopping. Interestingly, the shopkeepers are very amiable and mingle with the tourists in an unbelievably friendly way that you won’t forget such hospitality in your trips everywhere around the world. The 100-year-old restaurants and traditional teahouses are amazingly wonderful for those who are interested in tasting Iranian cuisine and the Persian black tea served with fanciful Iranian sweets.

Sabze Meydan Square is the main entrance of Tehran Grand Bazaar with a very special situation exactly in front of The Golestan Palace. Here, is one of the most attractive places of the complex as the visitors would see the symbolic fruit juice of Iran that is pomegranate drink, together with all other Persian dried fruits. The second amazing spot is the holy shrine that is beautifully ornamented and is believed to be the tombstone of one of the family members of the great prophet of Islam. There is another beautiful place that is called Imam Mosque in the Grand Bazaar. The colorful tile works and the calm, peaceful yard are the two reasons every tourist would be attracted to take a rest and enjoy for a while.

So, come and buy the best Persian souvenirs in Iran, collected all in one place, in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar. Everything you might think of in the oldest bazaar of the Middle East and maybe in the world has lasted, as studies reveal, from about the 4th or 7th century till now. You might be even surprised here as you would be invited to sit in the chamber stores and drink hot tea with the sociable Iranian shopkeepers and find yourself in the middle of a mystical discussion.

Which Countries Can Travel to Iran Without a Visa?

Iran has been always the target of attention for international tourists. Are you also interested in traveling to Iran? Aren’t you sure if you need a visa to visit Iran or not? Surprisingly, some countries don’t need visas to travel to Iran. In other words, traveling to Iran is very easy without any visa applications. Referring to the international negotiations between Iran and some countries, so far, political agreements have resulted in exempting fifteen countries from visa processing. The present article tries to review and examine this issue which deals with the necessary conditions for visiting Iran without a visa application.

The countries that don’t need visas to enter Iran without a visa are those that are listed below:

Azarbaijan

Bolivia

Turkey

Syria

Lebanon

Georgia

Armenia

Venezuela

China

Hong kong

Macau

Iraq

Oman

Malaysia

Egypt

Within this context, the citizens of the above-mentioned countries can travel to Iran only having their valid passports and the entry seal that they would easily receive while entering Iran. Of course, the allowed period of stay is different based on the negotiated deals between the diplomatic parties of each country. For example, as announced so far, the period of stay for the Syrians and Armenians is ninety days, Georgians forty-five days, Lebanese, Iraqis, Bolivian, and Azerbaijanis thirty days, Egyptians twenty days, Chinese, Macau, and Hong Kong twenty-one days, Turkish people ninety days, Venezuelans and Malaysians only fifteen days. If the citizens of these countries need to stay further in Iran, they can contact the agencies of the foreign affair ministry that are capable of accomplishing visa issues and request for updating their visas.

For the citizens of these countries, there are specific necessities to travel visa-free to Iran. Although these citizens do not need any visa for entering Iran, they have to complete a particular form available at an entry spot whether at the airport or any entry station. This form is usually referred to as an entry and exit form that is sometimes known as a tourist card.

This card and form are necessary and compulsory to be filled out for everyone who wants to enter Iran. This form should be also completed even for those who don’t require a visa. This form is considered to be the collection of personal information like the visitor’s name, purpose of travel, and other related points. Also important to know that every visitor needs to mention where he or she wants to stay in Iran together with the exact duration of their stay. Noteworthy to mention that, visa exclusion only concerns tourist and business visas. If foreign applicants want to apply for student or work permit visas, they necessarily need to apply for specific related visas.

More importantly, it is crucial to know that the citizens of these countries can only travel to Iran without a visa if they travel to Iran from their own countries as the country of origin. Otherwise, if they want to enter Iran from another country rather than their own, they would require a visa. It is noteworthy to mention that the policies that concern visa exclusion are subject to change and might undergo conversion based on international political issues and altering actions. So, it is highly necessary to check every time you want to travel to Iran and be updated before you plan to travel. The only reliable place you can always refer to check this up, without a doubt, is the embassy of Iran in your country.

Iranian visa, by itself, is of different categories that need to be applied for in a specific way. What are the different types of Iranian visas? Everyone based on his or her travel plan and purpose needs a specific type of visa. Every kind of visa requires diverse conditions and various documents that will be explained here.

There are generally, six major visa categories for Iranian visas:

Iran Tourist visa

Iran Student visa

Iran Work permit visa

Iran Visitor visa

Iran Business visa

Iran Political and governmental visa

Every one of the above-mentioned categories requires specific conditions and documents. For example, the documents you need to present for a tourist visa will be completely different from the documents you need to file for a business visa. But, generally, there are basic documents every type of visa necessarily needs to be offered by every applicant:

1- The completed form of visa application that is either online or in hard copy available in the embassy

2- A 4*6 passport photo which is a recently taken one not older than 6 months

3- Your valid passport with at least 6 month time- period till its expiry date with at least two blank pages for visa and the related stamps

The most important document, as mentioned before, is a valid visa with a valid date by the end day of your trip. Iranian citizens that are staying abroad and need to update their expired passport need to apply for a passport update in the nearest embassy and register their requests. Visa processing time is roughly and takes about seven working days. Referring to this fact, every visitor needs to apply for his or her visa in advance so that he or she can arrange the travel plans on time.

How to apply for an Iranian visa?

First of all, it is necessary to remember that the diplomatic relations between Iran and other countries affect visa conditions. This is the first step, foreigners need to refer to the website of the Ministry of foreign affairs of Iran and fill in the visa application form. It is also possible for them to refer to authentic travel agencies that have the authorized license for visa application services.

Generally speaking, issuing visas for the neighboring countries and those countries that have friendly relationships with Iran, is very easy and relatively fast. Personalized tours can facilitate the visitors’ travel to Iran easily and happily. So, do not hesitate to search for and consider various tours and packages for Iran and select the best available choice to enjoy your trip to the legendary land of Iran.

The fascination of Persian foods does not only come from their tastes, it rather comes from the generosity and bounty of a culture that has kept bestowing the beauty, grandeur, and peculiarity of Persian spirit to the lovers of this legendary territory. To show you only a glimpse of such an amazing carnival of aroma and glow, we invite you to join us in taking a selective look at the ten most delicious Iranian foods.

Chelo Kabaab

Without a doubt, Persian Chelo Kabaab (Meat Kebab served with Persian Rice) is definitely the king of Iranian foods. The very adjective I gave to this peculiar food, is not accidental. Factual story dating back to the Qajar dynasty when Nasir Al-Din, the famous Qajaar king craved a rich food made of lamb meat. His royal cook created a recipe of minced meat mixed with grated onion, salt, and a tinge of turmeric shaped like a ruler put on a metal stick to be barbequed and served with Persian Saffron rice, and grilled juicy tomatoes, Persian basil, lime, and spring onion. The rice should be boiled and then steam cooked for 30 mins. For its dressing, we need to add hot water to saffron powder or threads and let them be dense and dark red to be poured on top of the white rice. Creatively, there is another stick with tender fillet meat already marinated in onion and salt that comes with the Kebaab dish. When ready, Iranians are accustomed to pouring sumac powder on top of Kebaab rice which gives it a very special taste everyone would like a lot.

Murassa Polo

“Murassa’” Polo, or the Royal Chicken Rice, is indeed the queen food of Iran. The whole chicken is already marinated in olive oil, grated onion, lime juice, and salt, and then cooked in the oven while stuffed with the desired fragrant herbs and dried sour-sweet apricots. The boiled and steamed Persian rice is then served with an amount of Persian Barbery already boiled and fried for minutes scattered in creative patterns on top of the saffron-dressed rice. Since it is royal, Iranian would beautifully color up the rice dish with pieces of shiny sugar crystals, together with thin pistachio and almond slices. They finally put the whole stuffed saffron chicken on top or side the rice dish which looks really majestic and elegant.

Khorest-e-Qormeh Sabzi

“Khorest-e-Qormeh Sabzi” is a particular vegetable, and meat stew that is often the most favorite Persian food among international tourists. Parsley, chives, cilantro, fenugreek, baby spinach, or beet leaves should be extremely fried to look black. Lamb chops of moderate size should be also fried, and cooked together with the fried vegetables. Cooked red beans and a couple of dried limes are the must to be added to the materials. This sour green stew is served with Persian saffron rice and fresh onion pieces.

Khoresht-e- Bademjan

“Khoresht-e- Bademjan” or the Eggplant Stew is another lovely Persian stew again served with Persian saffron rice. Persian slender eggplants should be cut into two thin layers and fried. Lamb chops of moderate size should be also fried with onion and cooked with a good amount of tomato paste, a tinge of saffron, and cinnamon. When cooked well, two or three spoonfuls of lime juice should be added together with a tinge of red pepper. The stew should be well juicy and thick at the end.

“ Kalam Polo-e Shirazi” or Shiraz Lunar Cabbage Rice Dish, is without doubt a unique, and memorable food from Shiraz that would definitely mesmerize everyone. The boiled Persian rice should be steamed with layer-by-layer fried, chopped tarragon and basil already mixed with thin slices of cooked and fried lunar cabbage. Another layer should be fried lamb meatballs to be steam-cooked with rice. Steamed after 45 mins, it will be served with Shirazi diced cucumber, tomato, and onion salad that comes with a sour sauce made of lime juice, olive oil, salt, and mint powder.

Beryooni- e-Isfahan

“ Beryooni- e-Isfahan” or Isfahani Biryani is another special food from Isfahan. This tasty food is made of lamb meat cooked with onion, saffron, and cinnamon. When cooked well, it should be quite crushed with hands then fried in a small round pan and then put on an oily piece of Sangak (Persian Thick Traditional Bread) bread with a cinnamon and lime juice dressing served with a handful of basil and onion.

Koufte Tabrizi

“ Koufte Tabrizi” or Tabriz Meatball is also a very peculiar food from Tabriz to be tried. This traditional meatball is made from minced lamb well mixed with cooked split peas, cooked rice, chickpea flour, raw egg, chopped savages, and chives. These materials are shaped like a big ball, like a big orange stuffed with fried onion, walnut pieces, barberry, dried apricots, and a whole boiled egg. After getting quite dense in the fridge for a while, these balls should be golden fried and then cocked in hot water, tomato paste, and saffron. After being cooked, it will be served with a side dish of yogurt and cucumber mix.

Ghalieh mahi

“Ghalieh mahi- e- Booshehri” or Booshehr Fish Stew is another magic food from the south of Iran. This is a hot and sour stew made of fish and tamarind. The fried fish fillets already marinated in turmeric and salt, should be kept to be put in the vegetable stew that is going to be ready. To make the stew, cilantro, fenugreek, garlic, and onion should be chopped nicely and fried well. Tamarind should be well soaked in water and its fine juice should be added to the fried vegetable mix. Finally, the fried fish fillets should be poured into the sour vegetable stew to be quite thickened and juicy. This exotic stew could be served with garlic bread or Persian saffron rice.

“Ash- e- Reshteh Tehrani” or Persian Noodle Pottage from Tehran is really a grand, traditional royal pottage that is incredibly enticing. To make this delicious pottage, we need to steam-cook red and white beans together with lentils and chickpeas. They have to be mixed with well-chopped dill, chives, parsley, spinach, and cilantro in 40 mins. Persian noodles then need to be added to the materials for only 15 mins. When ready, Persian whey sauce should be added in and one thick layer as a final dressing on top decorated with fried mint sauce, small garlic dice, and a handful of fried onion.

” Khoresht- e- Fesenjan” or Pomegranate and walnut stew is a sour food from North Iran. This mouth-watering stew is basically made of Pomegranate juice and walnut mixed with chicken fillets. Breast or thigh chicken fillets should be fried with onion first. A good amount of onion needs to be fried with about 300 gr crushed walnut and then mixed and boiled with about 6 glasses of water. When they get oily enough after about 3 hours, three spoonfuls of Pomegranate paste and fried chicken fillets should be added to the materials. If you like it to be a bit sweet as well, you can add one spoonful of brown sugar to it as well.

Enjoy the funfair of Persian foods in Iran. This is the land of the supernatural indeed.

Taq-e-Bostan

Taq-e-Bostan is a complex of Sasanid inscriptions and petroglyphs in the northwestern part of Kermanshah province in Iran. This vault has been constructed in the third century and does have invaluable historical and artistic importance. There are some pivotal historical scenes like the coronation of King Khosrow Parviz, Ardeshir the Second, Shapour the Second, and the Third that have been uniquely inscribed there. There are also a few petroglyphs (tablets) written in Pahlavi’s handwriting. The existence of the mountains and the springs has made Bostan Vault an attractive promenade that still exists in its climactic beauty.

Taq-e-Bostan

Literary speaking, Bostan Vault, in Kurdish, means a vault made of stone. In historical sources, there are other names ascribed to this ancient place. During the Middle Ages, Hamdullah Mustawfi referred to this artistic monument as Shabdiz Arch. Anyhow, this complex has been constructed in the third century. During the Sasanid era, the kings ordered stone carving of their statues. At first, they chose Pasargad in Fars, as an appropriate site for this, but from Ardeshir the second onward, they considered Bostan Vault in Kermanshah, right on the way of The Silk Road. A green area with many natural springs that still exist the same way. The petroglyph of the Royal Hunting Ground belonging to the Taq-e-Bostan complex is the first stone panel in the world based on the painting principles. In this stone-carved artistic piece, Khosrow is seen on top of his horse, Shabdiz, as if this scene has been copied from a painting.

Amazingly, on the grand vault, there appear scenes of female musicians playing lyrics and wind instruments. On another side of the grand vault, there is another scene reflecting hug hunting as artistic and delicate as a painting panel. The embossed designs carved on Bostan Vault, have been evaluated carefully, and it was found that the colorful outfits of the horsemen have been made from golden strings incredibly woven together in accurate geometrical lozenge shapes. In the high hunting scene, the king wears an outfit with specific patterned designs of Simurghs on a background filled with symbolic circles. The outfits of the rowers also reveal dramatic patterns. In the side wall of the grand vault, the royal ornaments of the king’s outfit on the throne, are all dense golden roses. Similarly, the outfits of the guards and the elephant riders beautifully reflect the hand-sewn animalistic and floral ornaments.

Taq-e-Bostan

The first embossed image of Taq-e-Bostan reflects the coronation scene of Ardeshir the second, on the small arch. On the right side of the small arch, a particular laundry scene has been carved on the stone vault showing Ardeshir the Second standing with his left hand on his sword, while taking a ribboned circle from Ormazd with his right hand. Simultaneously, Mitra, with a halo around her head, the sun god stands behind him. The scene also shows Julian, the famous Roman Emperor, being seen on the floor as the captive of the Persian king, Ardeshir. The scene reflects a clear manifestation of the king’s features.

This Sasanid king does have large eyes and protruding eyebrows. His beard is shown clearly in a wavy shape and his thick and bushy hair is on his shoulders. He wears an earring, a neckless, and a bracelet that are clearly shown in detail. His earrings do have a small hanging ball with a neckless made of a row of big marbles. Noteworthy to add that, the images of the Persian Arch Angel ( Amshaasband) and Humans are behind the king.

The most important scene carved on Taq-e-Bostan is the one that reflects the coronation backdrop of King Khosrow Parviz. This setting does have a rectangular deck that is seven meters wide. Exactly beside the entrance of the vault, there are stone figures of the winged angels, a tree of life, hunting scenes, lagoons, seagulls, boats, and elephants that represent happy parties. Below the coronation scene, there is another carved figure of an armored soldier on a horse. In the coronation scene, the king stands in the middle, and Farwahar (the Persian Angel) stands beside him on the right side with a crown on his head. He bestows a godly coil to the king. Their outfits are nearly the same with corrugated pants that are fastened to their ankles with ribbons.

The small vault is between that of King Ardeshir and the grand arch. This scene shows the coronations of Shahpoor the second and the third. There are two figures and tablets above the arch’s wall. The tablets are in Pahlavi script with descriptive links about the kings. The eastern side of Bostan Vault, the eastern side of the arch walls, is the host of a natural spring that is close to the stone stairway with seventy-eight steps carved in the heart of the mountains. Above the area, one can also see a stone niche that is said to be hand-carved. About twelve years ago, still, another embossed figure was discovered in this area. This newly found image shows a figure with the hands upward towards the sky. An object is also seen in the hands. A few letters that look like Latin alphabets are also there below the image. Amazingly, close to the stone stairway beside the spring, there is another embossed form that is similar to that newly discovered one with the upward hands.

Recently, the complex is about to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Moreover, a research center on the Sasanid era is about to be constructed in the historical site of The Taq-e-Bostan so that the national researchers could communicate with the international researchers working on the identity, features, and legacy of the Sasanid period. Surprisingly, it is also said that once it was a rug made of jewelry on the floor of Taq-e-Bostan, but during the Arab invasion it was divided among the Arab commanders as the booty.

Historical Background

Chehel Sotoun Palace was constructed in 1647 under the patronage of Shah Abbas II, the seventh Safavid ruler of Persia. The Safavid dynasty (1501–1736) is credited with showing a golden age of Persian art, culture, and architecture, and Isfahan was at the center of this cultural renaissance. Shah Abbas I, the founder of Isfahan as the Safavid capital, laid the groundwork for the city’s transformation into one of the world’s most beautiful and well-planned cities. His successor, Shah Abbas II, continued this legacy by constructing monumental buildings and gardens, among which Chehel Sotoun holds a special place.

The palace was originally designed as a palace for royal receptions, banquets, and important state events. It was used to receive foreign dignitaries, ambassadors, and notable guests, making it a symbol of Safavid power and prestige. The name “Chehel Sotoun,” meaning “Forty Columns” in Persian, derives from the twenty slender wooden columns supporting the palace’s front veranda. When reflected in the long pool of water in front of the palace, the columns appear to double, giving the illusion of forty columns.

Chehel Sotoun is a royal palace and a celebration of Persian architectural and garden design, embodying the Safavid ideals of balance, harmony, and elegance. Over the centuries, the palace has survived various natural disasters, including fires, earthquakes, and invasions, and it has undergone multiple restorations to preserve its artistic and architectural splendor.

The Architecture of Chehel Sotoun

The architecture of Chehel Sotoun Palace is a masterpiece of Persian design, characterized by its harmonious proportions, elegant ornamentation, and seamless integration with the surrounding garden. The palace’s design follows the traditional principles of Persian architecture, emphasizing symmetry, geometry, and the use of open space.

The Grand Veranda and Forty Columns

One of the most iconic features of Chehel Sotoun is its grand veranda, which faces the garden and reflects the grandeur of the Safavid court. Twenty tall, slender wooden columns made from pine and plane trees support the veranda. These columns, with their intricately carved capitals, form the focal point of the palace’s entrance and create a sense of openness and lightness. The use of wood in the construction of the columns is a notable departure from the stone and brick commonly used in Persian architecture, adding to the unique character of the building. The number “forty” in the palace’s name, though not literal, is deeply symbolic in Persian culture, representing abundance and completeness. The reflection of the twenty columns in the pool, doubling the total to forty, is a poetic allusion to this cultural symbolism, creating an enchanting visual effect that enhances the overall experience of the building.

Mirror Work and Frescoes

Upon entering the palace, visitors are greeted by a dazzling array of mirror work (Ayeneh-Kari), and frescoes adorn the walls and ceilings. The use of mirror work, which involves the intricate arrangement of small mirror pieces to create reflective surfaces, is one of the defining features of Persian palatial architecture. In Chehel Sotoun, the mirror work is used to magnificent effect, covering the walls and ceilings of the central hall and creating a shimmering, luminous environment that reflects light in all directions. The frescoes in Chehel Sotoun are equally impressive, depicting scenes from Persian history, mythology, and court life. These paintings are a vivid portrayal of the grandeur and cultural sophistication of the Safavid court, showcasing events such as royal banquets, battles, and hunting scenes.

One of the most famous frescoes depicts the reception of the Mughal Emperor Humayun at the Safavid court, illustrating the importance of diplomatic relations between Persia and its neighboring empires. The frescoes also feature scenes from Persian epics, such as the Shahnameh (The Book of Kings), written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi. These scenes include heroic figures like Rostam, the legendary Persian warrior, engaged in battle and other mythological episodes. The combination of historical and mythological themes in the frescoes reflects the Safavid rulers’ desire to link their reign to Persia’s glorious past while reinforcing their contemporary political and cultural power.

The Central Hall and Reception Rooms

The central hall of Chehel Sotoun is the largest and most opulent space within the palace, serving as the main venue for royal receptions and state events. The hall is designed to impress with its high ceilings, expansive windows, and richly decorated walls. The hall’s ceiling is particularly noteworthy for its intricate wooden beams and mirror work, which create a sense of grandeur and majesty. The reception rooms that flank the central hall are smaller but no less elegant. These rooms were used for more intimate gatherings and meetings, and they are decorated with similar attention to detail, featuring frescoes, mirror work, and elaborate stucco designs. The windows of these rooms open onto the garden, allowing natural light to flood the interiors and providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The Persian Garden

Chehel Sotoun Palace is set within a traditional Persian garden, an integral part of the overall design. The Persian garden, known as a chahar bagh, is based on the principle of creating a paradise on earth, with symmetrical layouts, flowing water, and lush greenery. The garden at Chehel Sotoun is divided into four quadrants by a series of water channels (qanats) and walkways, with the central pool as the focal point. The garden’s design reflects the importance of water in Persian culture, both as a practical necessity in the arid climate and as a symbol of life and abundance.

The long pool in front of the palace is a decorative feature that cools the air and creates a microclimate within the garden. The sound of running water from the fountains and channels adds to the tranquil atmosphere, making the garden a perfect retreat from the heat and dust of the city. The trees and flowers in the garden are carefully chosen for their beauty and fragrance, with cypress, plane, and fruit trees providing shade and roses, jasmine, and other flowers adding color and perfume to the air. Integrating the palace with its garden is a hallmark of Persian architectural philosophy, emphasizing the harmony between nature and the built environment.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Chehel Sotoun Palace is an architectural masterpiece and a cultural icon that reflects the Safavid dynasty’s political, artistic, and diplomatic achievements. The palace served as a stage for some of the most important diplomatic events of the Safavid era, hosting foreign dignitaries and ambassadors from the Ottoman Empire, Mughal, India, and European nations. These receptions were not only displays of Persian hospitality but also opportunities for the Safavids to assert their power and influence on the world stage. The frescoes in the palace provide valuable insight into the cultural and political dynamics of the time, illustrating the Safavids’ efforts to establish themselves as a dominant force in the region while preserving their connection to Persia’s rich cultural heritage.

The scenes of royal banquets, battles, and diplomatic encounters are a visual record of the Safavid court’s opulence and sophistication. In addition to its historical significance, Chehel Sotoun Palace is an important example of the Persian architectural tradition, blending elements of Islamic, Persian, and Central Asian design. The palace’s use of mirror work, frescoes, and garden design influenced subsequent architectural developments in Iran and beyond, and it remains a source of inspiration for contemporary architects and artists.

Restoration and Preservation

Over the centuries, Chehel Sotoun Palace has faced numerous challenges, including fires, earthquakes, and the general wear and tear of time. However, thanks to extensive restoration efforts, the palace has been preserved as a cultural heritage site and continues to attract visitors worldwide. The restoration has focused on preserving the intricate frescoes, mirror work, and stucco decorations and maintaining the garden and water channels. The Iranian government and UNESCO have made significant efforts to protect the palace as part of Isfahan’s larger historical landscape, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Today, Chehel Sotoun Palace is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the Safavid era and the architectural beauty of Persian design. The palace is also used for cultural events and exhibitions, ensuring it remains a vibrant part of Iran’s artistic life.

Conclusion

Chehel Sotoun Palace is a stunning example of Persian architectural brilliance, blending opulence, elegance, and harmony in a way that continues to captivate visitors centuries after its construction. As a symbol of Safavid power, culture, and diplomacy, the palace represents a golden era in Persian history, when art, architecture, and politics converged to create a legacy that endures to this day. The palace’s mirror work, frescoes, and garden design are testaments to the artistic achievements of the Safavid dynasty. At the same time, its role as a venue for royal receptions and diplomatic events highlights its importance as a center of political and cultural life. Today, Chehel Sotoun stands as a proud reminder of Iran’s rich heritage and continues to inspire admiration for the beauty and sophistication of Persian architecture.

It is a particular food of Gilan that is Made with a special kind of beans, egg, and green vegetables and served with rice. Rice has been cooked in Gilan in the form of Kateh.

Baghali Ghatogh

Golestan Province and Chekdermeh

This delicious food is the most famous popular Turkmen dish in Golestan province. Turkmen cook this dish at all their parties and celebrations and even picnics. For preparing it, mutton, spices, and tomato paste are cooked in a pot called Kazan. Then the mutton is set aside, and the rice cooks in the broth. Finally, the cooked rice is put into a dish, and the pieces of meat are placed on it. A favorite Turkmen drink, camel milk, is served alongside this dish. Kazan is a cast-iron circular pot used by nomadic tribes in Central Asia, especially the Turkmens, since ancient times.

Northeast of Iran, the Religious land

Mashhad is one of the holiest cities in Iran that hosts the shrine of the eighth Imam of Shia. Also, the tomb of one of the most famous Iranian poets, Ferdowsi, is there. However, the food culture of Mashhad is so rich.

Mashhad and Shashlik

When visiting Mashhad, be sure you eat a special kind of kebab, Shashlik. The necessary ingredients for this delicious Kebab are lamb ribs, onions, yogurt, saffron, lemon juice, oil, pepper, and tomato. Sheep meat has excellent quality in Mashhad, so its shashlik has a unique taste. For cooking, the lamb ribs are flavored in a mixture of chopped onion, yogurt, saffron, lemon juice, oil, and pepper for at least 12 hours and grilled on the fire. Finally, they serve it with rice, grilled tomato, sumac, fresh lemon, and fresh vegetables.

Shashlik

Northwest of Iran, the Azari people

Although the Azari people live in different provinces in the northwest of Iran, they share many things among themselves and have a delicious food culture.

Tabriz and Koofteh Tabriz (Tabrizi Meatballs)

It is one of the traditional and old Iranian dishes belonging to Tabriz. The ingredient includes rice, yellow split peas, aromatic herbs, ground beef, leeks, onion, and spices wrapped around a core of boiled egg, walnut, fried onion, and prune. Also, its juice serves in a separate dish with shredded bread before the main course. If you like to eat Koofteh Tabrizi, you must visit the traditional restaurants of Tabriz City.

Ardabil and Ash-e Doogh

Ardabil, another Azari city in Iran, has its local food. Ash-e Doogh is a food like soup. It is cooked with peas, sour yogurt, garlic, and aromatic vegetables like leek and cilantro. I prefer you to taste this delicious food, especially during the cold weather of Ardabil.

Urmia (Orumiyeh) and Shoorje

Shoorje is one of the delicious dishes of Urmia that can be served both as an appetizer and as a main dish and is also a good option for parties. It is a mixture of yogurt, egg, onion, cooked minced meat, broth, spices, cornstarch, and saffron.

East of Iran, the Baloch people

Each region of our country has its own food culture, and Sistan and Baluchestan are no exception. If we want to talk about the food culture of this province, we can divide it into two parts, Sistan and Baluchestan. In the Baluchestan region, animal husbandry is widespread, so the main base of their cuisine is meat and dairy products. Also, they use much spicy spices and onions in cooking their stew. Of course, Baloch people use goat meat more than other animals. The people of Chabahar and Konarak and, in general, the residents of the coasts of Oman, include all kinds of fish food in their meals. In this area date palm is a product that is abundant and has high quality, so they use it in most of their daily meals.

Since the Sistan region was known as Iran’s granary in the past, people use more cereal and grain in their meals and dishes. On the other hand, juicy foods are also so favorite there.

Baluchestan and Tanoorcheh

Tanoorcheh is a hearty and delicious kebab in the Baluchestan region and is considered one of the most popular dishes there. As you can guess from the name of it, Tanoorcheh is a grilled dish prepared in the oven. There are two ways to cook it. In the first method, the mutton is divided into large pieces and put on palm wood skewers. Finally, these skewers are put in the oven to grill. To make meat juicy and delicious, they put a water container inside the oven to keep it moist. In the second method, after they have slaughtered a whole sheep, clean and empty the inside of its stomach and sew it together, then its arms and legs are tied and hanging in the oven until it cooks. Like other kebabs, Tanoorcheh is served with rice or bread.

Sistan and Kashk Zard (Yellow Curd)

Kashk Zard, known as Sistani Kashk and Zaboli Kashk Zard, is a kind of curd popular in Sistan. It is not similar to curds in other parts of the country. Kashk Zard is a kind of dairy-cereal product with a powder and yellowish form. It consists of spices, turmeric, and ground wheat that are placed in a cotton bag for a week to 10 days, then it is kneaded, powdered, and uses as a nutritious food. Sistani people fry Kashk Zard with oil and then add water to take a soup-like form. Then, they mix it with shredded bread and eat it.

West of Iran, Kurdish, and Lurs people

Kurdish People

A vast number of the world’s Kurds live in the western part of Iran, in the vicinity of the Zagros mountains. The pure nature and climate conditions and the development of animal husbandry and agriculture in Kurdistan Province have made the foods of this land unique.

Kermanshah and Khoresh Khalal

It is a luxury food usually served at weddings or ceremonies belonging to Kermanshah. Khalal means slices, and in this food, it is almond slices as the main ingredient. Meat, dried limes, barberry, tomato paste, saffron, rose water, and spices are other ingredients of this food.

Kordestan and Kelaneh

Kelaneh is a local nutritious bread of Kordestan that is like Pizza but cooked in a traditional style. The bread dough is mixed with green onion and other vegetables, then fried in animal oil.

Lurs People

Lorestan province is the land of springs, lagoons, waterfalls, hospitable people, and rich food culture.

Khorramabad and Ghelyeh Torosh

If you ask locals in Khorramabad which food they recommend you taste, the answer will most likely be Ghelyeh Torosh. This favorite stew is a mixture of potato, meat, and pomegranate paste. Chicken also can be used instead of meat.

Borujerd and Kebab

It is considered the highest-quality Iranian kebab. It includes Kebab koobideh, Kebab Barg, and Chenjeh. The famous one is Koobideh. Borujerdi koobideh is not much different from other Iranian Koobidehs. The use of high-quality meat and the meticulously skilled cooks make it a popular dish.
