Iran has a beautiful and unique nature and the diversity of Iran’s climate has made many valuable sceneries. Iran Caves as a feature of Iran’s nature is magnificent.

As caves were human’s first haven, they always come with mysterious wonderments. Iran caves are no exception to this concept.

In this blog, we have tried to present Iran’s greatest caves for those who seek to explore within the mountains.

Katale Khor Cave

Katale Khor is located in Khodabandeh city of Zanjan province. This cave is located in the low stoops of the Zanjan mountains, so you must hick a little.

Katale Khor is one of the most beautiful and largest Iran Caves, which has three floors. Because the mountain blocks the sunlight, the cave has been named after this feature “the Sun Devourer”.

To enter the cave, you have to cross a corridor of 4000 meters. The roof of this vestibule is short and has led to several others. The long corridor of the cave and its short roof made it possible only for professional cavers to visit.

The vestibule reaches a corridor that is full of uphills and dry pits. In the end, this corridor leads to a large hall where there are beautiful stalactites, stalactites, and columns.

Some studies conducted by geologists in Katale Khor Cave show that the end of this Cave reaches Ali Sadr Cave in Hamadan.

Ali Sadr Cave

Ali Sadr is one of the most famous Iran Caves attractions in western Iran and one of the water caves, which is located in Ali Sadr village 75 km northwest of Hamadan.

There is a river in Ali Sadr Cave, which reaches a depth of 14 meters and the maximum height of the space inside the cave is 40 meters.

One of the interesting features of Ali Sadr Cave is its climate. The air inside the cave is cooler in summer and warmer than outside in winter.

The possibility of boating in the depths of the cave and the 11 km length of Ali Sadr has made this beautiful cave one of the rarest water caves in the world.

In different parts of the cave, you can see lakes and waterways that are very clear and odorless. This means that if you are sitting in a boat, you can easily see the depth of the water and the floor of the cave. According to studies, the water of Ali Sadr Cave is supplied from underground springs and there is no animal life in it.

Shapur I Cave

Shapur I Cave is located in Kazerun at the end of Tang-e Chowgan in Fars province. Bishapur and Tang-e Chowgan are two important sites of the Sassanid dynasty in Iran.

The reason naming this cave after Shapur I one of the greatest kings of the Sassanid dynasty is the existence of a seven-meter statue of Shapur at the beginning of the cave.

Shapur I Cave is located inside the mountain and its height is 15 meters. In addition to the statue of Shapur, there are hand-made crypts on the left side of the cave’s entrance.

Shapur Cave is divided into three parts. The first part is very smooth with a length of 80 meters and most visitors can visit this part. At the end of this section is a precipice with large niches on both sides.

The walls next to these niches are polished, which seems to be prepared for masonry. The third part of this cave also consists of two reservoirs that can be seen together on a rock at the left end of the cave. These reservoirs were filled with water droplets, which in the past were used as a source of water for the people.

Quri Qala Cave

This magnificent cave is located northwest of Ravansar, Kermanshah province, and is one of the longest caves in western Asia. Also, this cave is the largest water cave in the Middle East.

This large blue cave dates back to 65 million years ago. Quri Qala Cave is one of the seven registered national natural monuments of Iran. The temperature in Quri Qala varies between 7 and 11 degrees Celsius, which is usually stable throughout the year.

The length of the Quri Qala cave is 12 km and the depth of the pools in it reaches 14 meters. Tourists experience indescribable tranquillity in the underground world by walking among the beautiful halls of this cave.

Sahulan Cave

Sahulan which is located in West Azerbaijan province in Kurdish means ice. There are also many pigeon nests around Sahulan Cave, which is why the locals call it “Kone Koter”, which means “pigeon nest” in Kurdish.

Sahulan cave has two openings, both of which are located on the south side of the cave.

There are some important tips for visiting Sahulan such as that when entering the cave, there is an unpleasant smell of sulfur with a lot of moisture, which may bother you a little. Then there is the matter of the cave’s low temperature. So it’s cold always.

For the rivers inside the cave, there are rowing boats for tourists to visit, through which they could visit other parts of the cave. The first lake of Sahulan cave is 200 square meters and its water is clear.

Dengezlu Cave

Dengezlu Cave is located in the western part of the Zagros mountain range and near Dengezlu village of Semirom in Isfahan Province.

This beautiful village is more than a hundred years old. Experts believe that Dengezlu’s excellent geographical location has provided a kind of natural protection against attacks by foreign tribes and natural disasters.

In the past, the water of this cave was mostly used for emergencies and it is very cool and pleasant.

Inside Dengezlu Cave, there are various halls, large, and small water springs.

Many cavers consider Dengezlu a living museum of geological phenomena. There are large halls and seven different lagoons in this Cave, which beauties it more.

Karaftu Cave

70 km northwest of the city of Divandarreh in Kurdistan province and on a high cliff, there is a very beautiful and amazing cave.

The name stands for the effort of early women and men who built this haven without the proper advanced tools.

Karaftu Cave dates back to the third geological period. This cave was used as a place for human habitation in the past, so the inner body of the cave has undergone many changes to be ready for human life.

For this reason, if you visit Karaftu, you will see a large number of nested rooms, winding corridors, and halls. Detailed carvings of human, animal, and bird figures can be found in this cave.

At the door of a room on the third floor, there is a Greek inscription about the Heracles. It is written in the inscription that this is the house of Heracles, whoever enters it is safe.

As we mentioned, these are some of Iran Caves. Professional cavers could seek more and Iran would offer whatever they want.

Long ago, it seemed only those seeking solitude would ever plan a journey to a desert. Now, it’s the most adventurous thing a person could do.

Iran’s nature could amaze people in ways they never had ever thought. Iran Deserts are like a great magician, Merlin perhaps, or Dumbledore himself. Many lands with many different shapes could change.

It’s not like if you go to Shahdad salt-pan for instance, the next time, those yardangs would be the same.

Iran offers you various types of deserts and salt pans. Each have their unique features, each has their atmosphere, and spiritually take you to places you have never explored inside you.

The Desert and Salt-pans of Iran could be divided into five sections. Each section contains a different type of desert and salt-pan that has been known so far.

Iran’s central desert is bounded on the north by the eastern Alborz mountain range and Mount Binalud on the east.

Masileh Desert

This is limited from the north to the eastern and central Alborz mountains, from the south to the Rig-e Jenn desert, from the west to the central mountains of Iran and the Karkas mountain range, and from the west to the western deserts.

This particular desert includes the deserts of Maranjab, Rig Dam, Nakhjir Valley, and mountains such as Siah Kuh and also located in the central parts of Iran and the western margin of the central desert. Maranjab desert is located in the south, and Kavir National Park is located in the west.

Lut Desert or the Dasht-e Lut

It is another impassable desert not just in Iran but also in the world. In some parts of this desert, there are no living creatures, not even one single bacteria. The hottest spot on earth is located in this desert.

Darreh-ye Khoshk Rud

Or in English, “the Valleys of the Dry River”, are located in Kerman province and 150 km from Shahdad city in the direction of Nehbandan, northern Dasht-e Lut.

Kal Shor is the only permanent river in Lut. At the same time, other channels flow into the area of Lut pits, the most important of which is the Khoshk River. This route does not have permanent water, but it is the passage of seasonal waters in northern Lut.

Three parallel paths with a steep slope from north to south fall into Lut’s salt pit.

Water erosion in a vertical direction has affected sedimentary strata with different pressure and has created scattering systems and sedimentary blocks.

It looks like the ruins of a city known as the city of Lut. This example and complications are specific to this region and have not been created in other areas of Lut.

It extends 20 km to the south of the corner of the dry valley in the form of a claw and is about 400 m above sea level, with vertical walls that intersect in a pyramidal shape. The grooves are created vertically as a result of techno-kite movements.

Shahdad Desert

The yardangs of Kerman are located in a plain that is on the southern edge of the Lut desert.

The shapes you see in Shahdad are the result of wind and water erosion over many years. They seem to be the ruins of an old city doorway, walls, and everything but these shapes are compacted masses of soil, sand, and tall pebbles.

Although, some archaeologists believe that this desert was once inhabited.

Shahdad is full of eerie wonders. You could easily feel invisible people staring at you, and if you shout, the mighty winds will steal your voice.

Gandom Beryan

From above it looks like a ladle, and on the surface of the earth, it has almost flat basaltic rocks. These rocks are the result of the eruption of several volcanic craters.

Within the heart of these volcanic plains lies the hottest spot on earth. In Persian, they call it “Gandom Beryan”. In English, it means, roasted wheat.

Some locals believe that travelers would place their wheat grains on black basalt stones and after a while, they would roast due to the heat. Color-infrared Aerial Photography has proven that this special spot is the hottest place on earth.

Rig-e Jenn

Ok, the thing about deserts in Iran is that they have weird names. In Persian, Rig means pebbles, that’s fine but Jenn is the word for “Goblin”. It is the boundary between Tabas and Yazd deserts. This dessert is one of the most impassable areas in the world due to its vast swamps, high and vast dunes. Only a limited number of people have crossed it so far. Tabas and Yazd deserts are also the boundary between the Dasht-e Lut and the Great salt-pan. Gavkhouni swamp is located in this area.

The Lack of water resources in this vast expanse of dunes, along with natural barriers such as salt marshes, have been the reasons why this region has out of human’s reach for centuries. Therefore, it was known as the goblins’ territory.

Folk tales, obscure myths, and legends about Rig-e Jenn have generally originated from the inability of travelers to cross this desert.

Anyway, there is no clear boundary for the goblins’ territory. Briefly, this region is located in central Iran in the western part of the central desert and salt-pans.

Maranjab Desert

Located in Isfahan province and its average altitude is about 850 meters above sea level. Most of this desert is dunes and is rich in vegetation. The vegetation of this area includes saline plants such as turmeric trees and arches and shrubs.

The Maranjab Desert and its beautiful nights can compete with any forest or sea. Maranjab Desert’s features have attracted around 120% of the tourists who come to Kashan in the first four months of the year. 120 percent means over one and a half million people.

Along with the dunes that are the main attraction of the desert, the presence of Maranjab Castle and the island wandering in the Maranjab Desert, gives more motivation to tourists to come and explore this region.

Contrary to popular belief that the desert plain lacks a sign of human life and livelihood, we must hand it over to the deserts that were once magnificent places for the early humans to live in.

Evidence from the desert reflects the fact that in prehistoric times, human groups continued to live in their particular social forms in today’s desert, which had different living conditions.

However, because of gradual climate change and under the impact of certain geographical and historical conditions, they have been forsaken.

This is perhaps why, nowadays they look as if they are weird, mysterious, and even scary. But planning a journey to the desert could change your life forever. There is more to the desert and salt-pans than what we hear about or see in pictures. It’s a journey from within.

Let’s first take a baby step and start with the definition of Wetlands. Wetlands or Lagoons are ecosystems, somewhere between land and water.

What we have tried to introduce in this blog, are Iran’s Wetlands or Iran’s Lagoons. As many people come to visit Iran’s historical attractions, they also could be interested in Iran’s wildlife and nature.

Wetlands or Lagoons in Iran, are very spectacular. If someone is looking for a beautiful quiet place these ecosystems are the best.

These lagoons are important not just for tourist reasons but also because of the environment they make for all kinds of creatures.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat is the oldest international treaty in the world, dated 1971. It has been the main reference for those who want to know about Iran Wetlands or Lagoons.

In this blog, you will recognize better about Iran’s most interesting wetlands and lagoons.

Anzali Wetland

Anzali Wetland is not only a vast body of water but also a large source of freshwater that is surrounded by several villages. Several decades ago, Anzali was a major waterway leading to the Caspian Sea.

This northern wetland is mild and humid most of the time and its annual rainfall goes up to 2000 mm.

Anzali Lagoon’s exclusive climatic conditions make good unparalleled biodiversity in the region. 150 species of birds, 43 species of fish, dozens of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and more than 100 species of herbaceous plants have been recorded in this wetland.

July, August, and even September can be considered the best times of the year to visit, because not only the weather is fine but also Anzali Wetland’s surrounding vegetation are in their best condition and ready to blossom. You could see the rare native and migratory birds in the lagoon as well.

Zrebar Wetland

Marivan in Kurdistan province hosts one of the most beautiful natural ecosystems; Zrebar Lake. Zre, in old Persian means sea. Though it is a lake it also fits the definition of a wetland.

The altitude of the lake is around 1285 meters above sea level, therefore, Zrebar’s winters are very cold and it often freezes.

Zrebar is one of the top places for mountaineering and fishing. The best time to visit this is spring and summer because, as mentioned earlier, the winters are cold and icy.

One of the attractions of Zrebar Wetland is that no flowing river enters it. Its water comes from rain, snow accumulated in the surrounding mountains, and freshwater springs.

Nymphaea, sometimes referred to as lotuses, along with reeds have decorated this wetland like no other.

Kanibrazan Wetland

Kanibrazan wetland or lagoon is located in the north of Mahabad to Miandoab road. It is one of the most important wetlands in the south of Urmia Lake. KaniBrazan gets its water from its springs, rainfall, and annual runoffs.

In 2005, Kanibrazan lagoon was set to be a no-hunting area and a couple of years later it was introduced as the first bird-watching site in Iran. In March 2009, under the supervision of the Environment Organization KaniBrazan lagoon became a wildlife refuge.

This wetland takes its name from a spring called Kani which was both a water source for villagers and a huge herd of boars. Boar in the Persian language is called “Goraz” and in the dialect of people over, there is Braz.

Kanibrazan was much larger in the past, locals referred to it as “the sea”! It is better to visit this wetland or lagoon in mid-autumn.

Gomishan International Wetland

Gomishan International Wetland is located near Bandar Torkaman. It is one of the old international wetlands in Iran and Golestan province.

This wetland, which is affected by the tidal waves of the Caspian Sea from the west and receives floods from the Atrak river from the east, welcomes a large number of local and even foreign fishermen every year because of the interference of the fresh and saltwater in this region is a rare phenomenon.

The eastern border of this wetland is covered by low plains. The increase of about 1.8 meters in the water level of the Caspian Sea during the past years has led to the flooding of a large part of them. As a result, the Gomishan wetland is now full of shallow and saline dams.

Although natural meadows around the wetland are used for agriculture and despite oil projects that have been developed on the margins of Gomishan Lagoon, in general, it has preserved its unique environmental values and biodiversity.

A significant change in weather conditions is noticeable between the northern and southern borders of the wetland. In the northern areas, the annual rainfall is much higher than in the southern areas. In general, the temperate climate of this wetland is such that tourists can visit it in any season of the year.

Miankaleh Wetland

Miankaleh International Wetland and Wildlife Sanctuary located in Mazandaran province is the first registered international wetland in Iran that has a special biological, historical, economic, educational, and recreational richness. This complex includes Miankaleh Peninsula, Ashuradeh Island, and Gorgan Bay.

The presence of rare animal and plant species living in this international lagoon is not comparable with any other wetland. Miankaleh lagoon is very unique therefore the ecosystem it presents is one of a kind.

Miankaleh wetland and Ashuradeh Island are some of the few natural regions in Iran that have been protected from urban and human development. They are referred to as the precious jewel of nature in northern Iran.

About 288 species of bird could be found in this lagoon which is why, in terms of bird-watching, the Miankaleh wetland is the best place in Iran for those who follow such an occupation.

You could easily watch birds such as Pelicans, flamingos, cormorants, swans, ducks, white-tailed sea eagles, francolins, and Caspian seas pheasants.

These birds find their food in the water of this lagoon. Fish species are also very diverse in Miankaleh Wetland thereby, it’s a perfect spot for fishermen. High variety of vegetation, tidal margins, meadows, and pomegranate gardens are some of the nicest sceneries of this complex.

Lagoons are weird. For a long time, people thought of them as places for rotten and wasted water, with no value or function. Now, we realize how wrong we were about them. Wetlands are sometimes the beating heart of nature as they are so many different animal and plant inhabitance.

Lake Urmia

Last but not least is Lake Urmia. It has many wetlands and different types of ecosystems. We have a full blog dedicated to Lake Urmia as it is Iran’s largest lake and important international lagoons.

There are many more wetlands in Iran, there could even be a tour to just visit and explore Iran’s lagoons.

Scientifically speaking, the word “wildlife” refers to any living thing, from plants to animals or microscopic creatures. However, this is not exactly the concept when we come to traveling and tourism.

What is known as wildlife in the tourism industry are mainly animals, including vertebrates with five categories: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Iran has the most diverse geography and climate and rich biodiversity. Our country, Iran, is located at the crossroads of animal and plant distribution in neighboring regions and has contributed to the diversity of their wildlife.

As animals come to mind first when we talk about wildlife, Iran has 194 species of mammals, about 552 species of birds, 21 species of amphibians and 254 species of reptiles, 442 species of butterflies, and about 20,000 species of insects.

However, we must mention that experts believe that the extent of dispersion is directly related to the speed of the animal’s movement. Birds and mammals are more widely distributed than amphibians.

Iranian animals are known by gradual studies of different groups of animals, but so far no concerted effort has been made to register all Iranian animals regularly.

Based upon the Iranian Environmental Protection Agency’s data, 2000 species of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and inland fish, and about 1200 species of fish in marine waters have been identified in onshore and inland ecosystems.

Importantly, the wildlife of Iran has around 76 species that are on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

In 2013, the Environmental Protection Agency of Iran announced that at least 74 species of animals in this country are on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

In addition to the endangered wildlife creatures, Iranian cheetah, mammals such as the Persian yellow deer, the Asian zebra, the Caspian jawbone, the bustard, the leopard, the Asian black bear, the short-snouted crocodile, the blue whale, and the fin whale are endangered too.

Due to Iran’s large area, special climatic, and geographical conditions, it has different habitats with diverse plant and animal species.

This diversity and abundance among mammal species have made Iran’s wildlife so great that Iran can be called a collection of mammals all around the world like in Europa, Africa, and Asia.

Iran also has its specific mammals. For example, mammals such as roe deer, Persian honey badger, and edible dormouse, which are distributed in the north and northwest of Iran.

Honeybadger, desert hedgehog, and fruit-eating bat found in the southern regions of the country are African mammals. Black bears, Baluchi squirrels, and Indian desert jirds have also been sighted in the east and southeast of the country.

Insect-eating species like a shrew, Persian yellow deer, Persian onager (zebra), and Asian cheetah are the exclusive mammals of Iran according to some zoologists who have studied Iran’s wildlife carefully.

The dwarf shrew is the world’s smallest mammal, and the blue whale with 130 tons, the world’s largest mammal.

After mammals, the next classification of our country’s wildlife leads us all to the amphibians and reptiles. With a sharp scientific look, some biologists separate this one category into two: reptiles and amphibians, and examine them apart from one another.

According to this classification, there are 4 types of reptiles in the world: Testudines, Crocodilia, Squamata, and Rhynchocephalia, and the reptile species found in Iran are snakes, worms, turtles, and crocodiles.

Mugger Crocodile: or broad-snouted crocodile in Iran, there is a specific crocodile called “Persian Crocodile”. The main habitat of this crocodile is 380000 hectares and is Mugger Crocodile Protected Area.

These sites are under the protection of the Environment Organization of Iran’s wildlife. Most of these crocodiles are concentrated in ponds in southern Baluchestan.

Biologists estimate the number of these Mugger Crocodile up to 400. In the distant past, however, the crocodile’s biological range extended to the southern coast of Iraq.

Mugger Crocodile is a carnivore and an ambush hunter and has a varied diet that includes fish, reptiles, and mammals. Smaller Mugger Crocodiles feed more on insects, amphibians, crustaceans, small fish. Larger Mugger Crocodile on birds, reptiles, fish, and mammals.

Mugger Crocodile is also on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and wildlife (IUCN).

These animals of the wildlife live in an environment, which also could be an attraction for those who seek to know Mother Nature. Other than Iran’s wildlife and Iran’s nature owes its diversity to its broad geography. In This geography, one could find different climates which is why Iran possesses a rich collection of plants.

You could spot the world’s hottest place in the Dasht-e Lut and drive just a couple of hours away, and freeze in the mountains covered in snow.

The wildlife aside, Iran has the richest collection of plant species in the Middle East with about twelve thousand plant species. These species include a variety of trees and plants from subtropical forests to the desert and terrestrial plants.

More than one-tenth of Iran’s area is forest cover. The most extensive forests have trees like oak, spruce, elm, cypress and are found on the mountain slopes near the Caspian Sea.

Inside the Iranian plateau, oak trees are found on Zagros mountains’ slopes too. Trees such as sycamore, poplar, willow, walnut, beech, maple, and mulberry grow in rural areas.

In spring, most of Iran’s plains are covered with wild plants, flowers, and shrubs, providing food for the cattle. However, in summer, the hot sun could destroy them and this happens a lot.

According to FAO reports, the main types of forests in Iran are Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests of the north, mountain forests and juniper forests in the northeastern, Pistachio forests in the east, south, and southeast, Oak forests in the central and western regions, shrubs of desert and plains in the central and northeastern parts, and the subtropical forests of the southern coasts, such as the mangrove forests.
