Chogha Zanbil: Grandeur of Iran’s Elamite architecture

Chogha Zanbil

Chogha Zanbil, an age-old ziggurat in Khuzestan, southern Iran, is the first Iranian site registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list and one of the oldest stepped temples in the world.
This structure was built about 3,200 years ago at the order of Untash-Gal and now has three standing tiers out of its original five.
Its structure is made of brick and mud brick, including palaces, royal tombs, and a water purification system within three concentric walls. Despite the passage of time, Chogha Zanbil stays steadfast and is regarded as an emblem of Elamite art, faith, and engineering know-how.
